Mumbai: Ekta Kapoor, Tony and Diya Singh and J.D. Majethia ruled our television screen with an endless supply of daily soaps in the first half of the 2000s. Here’s looking at the newbies who have now joined their ranks


Asit Modi, Neela Telefilms

Probably making comedies comes quite easily to him though he has also tried making soaps and has made one successful daily. But it is comedy that he really excels in. Asit started his production company in late 90s with Hum Saath Saath Hain. His next sitcom Yeh Duniya Hai Rangeen didn’t match up to the success of his earlier comedy. With daily soaps ruling the roost, it was curtains down for comedies. Asit later tried his hand at daily fiction with Saarthi which did fairly well. He returned to comedy with Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma after SAB rebranded itself as comedy channel in 2008. Needless to mention, for over four years now, the show has been SAB’s major driver for growth. Tarak Mehta... is the only daily comedy which has completed 1000 episodes recently. However, Asit’s recent attempts to revisit daily soaps with Krishnaben Khakrawala and Hamari Saas Leela met a dismal fate.


Kavita Barjatya, Rajshri Productions

She heads the TV division of the well known film production house Rajshri. Kavita started her career as assistant to her brother Sooraj in 2004, and owes her success to him. It was Sooraj who asked Kavita to start something on her own. Thus began Kavita’s journey into TV production with Woh Rehne Wali
