Mumbai: “Reality shows have given us an identity. Generally, actors represent our voice in movies, so the fans of the song don’t know who the real person behind a particular song is. Thanks to the new breed of music shows, today people know what a Mahalaxmi Iyer looks like,” says playback singer Mahalaxmi Iyer, who has been a part of shows like Jo Jeeta Wahi Superstar, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa as a guest judge.

Interestingly, with a new line up of shows like The Dewarist, MTV Unplugged and MTV Coke Studio, the playback singers get an opportunity to come up with independent music and showcasing it live on television. Shilpa Rao, who has been part of such shows, explains, “Such shows were an experiment, they could have easily crashed but I am glad that our audiences liked the idea and made the concept a hit. With MTV Coke Studio or The Dewarists, the viewers get to see the music making sessions. It’s a big process, where we come up with a tune, put it all together and keep listening to it over and over again for perfection.”

Bringing such kind of visibility to these singers is music channel Sony Mix with its new show Mix Solos. On the show, singers share some behind the scene moments while recording some of their best films songs and also reveal some of their candid moments during live stage show performances.

Mix Solos comprises of classics and popular songs like Chhaiya chhaiya, Khuda jaane, Tu hi
