Mega-finale of talent hunt held

This is India’s first complete Indian Music National Talent Hunt. In September 2009, the Indian Music Academy Idea Jalsa selected artistes purely on the basis of musical expertise and skill in the 5 years to 45 years’ range. This is a first of its kind hunt that spans all forms of Indian music such as ghazal, bhajan, Sufi, folk, qawwali, Hindustani and Carnatic (Vocal and Instrumental).

After an intensive three-month long nationwide search across six cities - Chandigarh, Kolkata, Chennai, Bhopal, Mumbai and Nagpur - IMA discovered what can be called 18 Indian musical gems of GenNext who participated in the national semi-finals leading to the national mega finals that were held on December 11 and 12 respectively in Mumbai between nine finalists among them. Six winners will be groomed by the IMA stalwarts.

As this national talent hunt seeks musical excellence, other than an assessment of their talent by eminent musicians in each city, there was no other element of popular measurement like sms or audience voting. The eminent judges of the music fraternity included Hindustani vocalist Pt. Rattan Mohan Sharma, ghazal singer Jaswinder Singh, sitar maestro Niladri Kumar, tabla exponent Pt. Vijay Ghate, dhrupad exponents Gundecha Brothers, Carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam, sitar exponent Purbayan Chatterjee and Durga Jasraj, co-founder of IMA.
Padma Vibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Padma Vibhushan Pt. Jasraj and Padma Shri Hariharan graced the finale as the National level Judges.
