‘I believe in being bold, not sleazy’

Mumbai: Film-maker Sudhir Mishra’s upcoming film Inkaar is creating ripples for its subject on sexual harassment at workplace. He’s however unapologetic for using the word ‘sex’ in the film promos. In an interview with Screen, the film-maker of films like Hazar Khwaishein Aisi, Chameli and Khoya Khoya Chand, gets candid about power struggle at the workplace, bold cinema and the new audience. Excerpts

What inspired you to make a film on sexual exploitation at the workplace?

* It is there everywhere. We are living in a world, where women are claiming their rights at their workplace and everywhere. There is a difficulty of men accepting women in dominant position; they have to come to terms with many things now, including the right of women to say no, a basic fundamental and non-negotiable right. I thought it was an interesting subject, but Manoj Tyagi (writer) came through the idea based on lots of research around happenings in the urban corporate world. I was not interested in a film based on elementary right or wrong. I am interested in a film about a modern struggle for power in urban workspace, where men and women collide and juggle with different emotions like ambition, lust, etc. I wanted to make a film about two very strong characters, where you don’t understand who is right or wrong, and through the film provoke a lot of questions.
